Poland promises to send Ukraine another batch of Leopard tanks

Poland will send Ukraine another set of Leopards 2A4 in the next few weeks, the prime minister’s office announced after Poland became the first country to successfully send the first four tanks of the same brand.

On his recent visit to Kyiv on Friday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki (PiS, ECR) announced that the first deliveries of Leopards would soon be followed by another one.

Asked when the next ten Leopard tanks would be sent to Ukraine, Michał Dworczyk from the prime minister’s office told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that another batch of tanks is expected “in a few weeks” as soon as the Ukrainian troops complete their training. “Some of these tanks (to be sent) are used in the training,” he explained.

In addition to the Leopards, Poland will send Ukraine its old Polish-produced PT-91s and Soviet T-72s, which are set to reach Ukraine in weeks, “if not sooner”, said Dworczyk. They are practically “ready to be delivered, so they will arrive in Ukraine in the short run as well,” he added.

Poland became the first country to deliver the first tranche of Leopard-2 main battle tanks to Ukraine on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of the country. President Andrzej Duda promised the donation of the Leopards on 11 January in Lviv.

In late January, Germany agreed to allow other countries to send German-produced Leopards to Ukraine. Poland will be among the leading donors of Leopards 2A4, with 14 tanks promised, whereas Germany is set to deliver its 2A6 tanks, the German Defence Ministry recently said.
