Hungary slams Finland over anti-LGBTQ+ law, NATO membership

Finland lacks integrity and turns its back on Hungary by joining the European Commission’s lawsuit against the Hungarian anti-LGBTQ+ child protection law right after Hungary voted in favour of Finland’s accession to NATO, Hungarian Secretary of State Tamás Menczer said on Wednesday.

“Our Finnish friends still have a lot to learn about integrity. Begging until you get what you want, and then immediately turning your back – that’s not what decent people do, and this isn’t a reflection on us, but on them,” Hungarian Secretary of State Tamás Menczer told M1 TV station on Wednesday.

In mid-2022, the European Commission referred Hungary to the Court of Justice of the EU over the law that bans showing minors LGBTQ+ content in schools and the media.

“Education is a national competence, and it is the right of parents to decide on the education of their children,” Hungarian Justice Minister Judith Varga said about the case before the EU court.

Regarding Finland and Sweden, Hungary wants to continue building bilateral relations based on mutual respect, Menczer added.

Hungary still expects Sweden to make some reassuring moves about its desire to cooperate with us “based on mutual respect within the allied system,” Menczer said about Sweden’s NATO bid for which discussions in Hungary are still ongoing.
