Unidentified object with Russian writing on found in Polish forest

Debris of an unidentified military object that reportedly has Russian-language text on it was found in a forest in Central Poland, the Defence Ministry confirmed.

Several meters in length, the object was found near Zamość town, about 15 kilometres from Bydgoszcz city. An investigation into the matter was launched soon afterwards, said Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro.

“The situation does not threaten the safety of residents. The place of the find is being investigated by Polish officers, military police and sappers,” the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.

Private RMF FM radio later reported, without naming its sources, that the object without a warhead and with writings in Russian on it came from the testing of Poland’s air defence systems.

Yet, the radio added that the officials still had no certainty about the object’s origins, which will be further investigated.

Poland has initially been on alert for possible spillover of the weapons from the war in Ukraine. Last November, two people were killed by a misfired Ukrainian air defence missile, as established in an early investigation.

This time the situation is different, however, as the object was found not in any village or town close to the border but in another part of the country.

No traces of explosions or explosives were found at the site, the Gdansk District Prosecutor’s office said in a statement, adding that various hypotheses regarding the secured evidence are being investigated.

According to the sources cited by RMF FM, fighter jets were repaired near the site, close to a military airport used by the Polish armed forces.
