Serbia’s future is in EU, von der Leyen tells Vučić

Serbia’s future is in the EU, and further important steps need to be taken, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said following a phone call with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

Vučić stated on Instagram that the topics covered in the phone conversation were the necessary reforms, the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, and also the continuation of Serbia’s journey of European integration.

“The future of Serbia is in the EU, and further important steps need to be taken on that path,” said von der Leyen.

Serbia remains dedicated to the EU-backed dialogue with Kosovo and finding a compromise for the normalisation of the relationship, Vučić wrote on Instagram, adding that “clearly stated limitations” need to be considered, all with the goal of keeping peace and stability in the region and expanding cooperation.

Vučić and Kosovo PM Albin Kurti held meetings in Brussels on Monday, along with EU representatives, but the European proposal for Kosovo was not signed. A new round of negotiations is expected to be held on March 18th in Northern Macedonia.
