Romania revives state-owned company aiming to build fruit, veg network

Agribusiness House Unirea, a state-owned company that aims to create a national network of fruit and vegetable retailers, will be relaunched next week, announced Agriculture Minister Petre Daea after the concept failed under the previous Dancila government.

“Deliveries to supermarket chains and other partners will begin next week. Currently, quantities of tomatoes and cucumbers are available, and in the next period, strawberries, pumpkins, bell peppers, cabbage, green beans, sweet corn”, the Agriculture Ministry announced.

The initial idea came from Petre Daea, also Agricultural Minister in the Dancila government, in 2018. The aim was to create a network of more than 60 Romanian fruit and vegetable producers to compete with the big retailers.

The only stores opened were a cheese shop in Sibiu and a store in Bucharest. Both closed, however, because the state-owned company could not pay for the goods taken from the producers.

Now, Petre Daea insists that the project is feasible.

“We continue to push forward the trade mechanism designed to lead to a superior utilisation of national agricultural resources and production. Unirea will ensure the taking over and valorisation of vegetables from the producers”, the minister said.
