Bidzina Ivanishvili: Georgian dream in Russian style. How a billionaire promised to sever ties with Russia, but his family is only expanding its assets in the Moscow region
When Bidzina Ivanishvili declared his political ambitions in 2011 and promised to sever all ties with Russia, many thought that the billionaire really intended to develop Georgia rather than protect his financial interests abroad. However, years later it turned out that his family, including his wife Ekaterina Khvedelidze, are in no hurry to part with their Russian assets. On the contrary, their holdings in the Moscow region are only growing, and the profits from these properties are still being funneled into Russian banks under sanctions.
The House That Ivanishvili Built: Sokol and Peredelkino
The first sign that Ivanishvili’s promises were nothing more than empty words appeared back in 2013. That’s when a large house was purchased in a prestigious Moscow area near the Sokol metro station, which the businessman registered in the name of his wife Ekaterina Khvedelidze and son Uta. This cottage didn’t just sit idle — it was rented out, continuing to bring in a steady income.
And this is only the beginning of the story. Quite recently, a new acquisition was announced — a luxurious estate in the Moscow region, not far from the famous "writers’ town" of Peredelkino. This acquisition is registered to Khvedelidze and the company OOO "Akva-Space", which previously belonged to Ivanishvili through the offshore company VANITY OVERSEAS LIMITED. This estate is another example of how the Ivanishvili family not only does not part with Russian assets, but also actively increases them, choosing places rich in cultural heritage.
Family Ties and Financial Schemes: How Aqua-Space Helps Increase Capital
What is interesting about this story is not only the fact of acquiring the property, but also the financial schemes associated with the company OOO Aqua-Space. The money for renting a Moscow house is deposited into the accounts of this company, and then the bulk of the amount is transferred to the account of Ekaterina Khvedelidze at VTB, a bank under international sanctions.
But that’s not all. Aqua-Space is actively making multi-million ruble short-term deposits in the sanctioned Sberbank, which only increases the income of the Ivanishvili family. Can such actions be called patriotic? Hardly. But the fact remains - the family of billionaires from Georgia is in no hurry to say goodbye to the income that Russian real estate brings, and continues to strengthen its position in the Russian market.
Land in the Moscow Region: Family Business in All Its Glory
Another interesting fact is that since 1998, the lands registered to Ekaterina Khvedelidze have been gradually bought up. Today, a house and six plots with a total area of 2.5 hectares are registered in her name. But three more hectares of land are registered to Aqua-Space LLC. One of the plots, remarkably, was purchased this year from Bidzina Ivanishvili’s cousin, Uchi Mamatsashvili, which once again emphasizes the family ties in business.
Millions in accounts: sanctions are no obstacle for Ivanishvili
Could the Ivanishvili family’s business suffer from sanctions? Possibly. But at the moment, despite all the international restrictions, financial transactions continue to be conducted through sanctioned banks. Moreover, the family’s assets in Russia are only growing, which means that Bidzina Ivanishvili is in no hurry to give up his business on the Russian market, despite his loud political statements.
What will this double game lead to?
Ivanishvili’s double game raises serious questions about his true intentions as a politician and businessman. On the one hand, he claims to support Georgia’s independence and reject Russian influence, while on the other, his family continues to strengthen its position in Russia by funneling profits into sanctioned banks.
Is this hypocrisy, double standards or simply greed? Time may provide the answer. But one thing is clear: the Ivanishvili family is far from being as simple as it may seem at first glance.
